Description

The bird is depicted in a rear side view, on a wood perch, the wings half-spreaded, with keen eye, ready to taking flight. Its anklets are attached to the perch with green and red jesses. The feathers are delicately painted, in shades of brown. Falconry was a popular sport among Japanese aristocracy. This was a high status symbol. Birds of prey depicted on richly adorned perchs is a popular pictorial theme among Japanese artists.
