The stoneware rectangular plaque glazed in sancai, with green, yellow, brown, and turquoise blue enamels, depicting Budai seated in royal ease under a tree in a rocky landscape. He is with two attendants and a luohan which hold a cane. According to the legend, Budai (布袋), also known as “ Laughing Buddha”, is a Chinese buddhist monk of the 10th century. In the Mahayana tradition, he is believed to be the incarnation of Maitreya buddha. He is also worshiped by Daoists, as god of generosity, fortune and abundance.
