Description

Painting mounted on a scroll, executed in ink and polychrome pigments on paper, depicting the Eight Taoist Immortals.

This painting depicts an assembly of Taoist immortals in the sacred mountains, a frequent theme in Chinese pictorial tradition. The vertical composition shows numerous characters arranged in small groups among rocks, pine trees and clouds.

The scene evokes the gathering of the Eight Immortals, legendary figures in Taoism associated with wisdom and longevity. Among them are Lü Dongbin, often depicted with a sword, Li Tieguai recognizable by his crutch and gourd, and He Xiangu the only woman in the group. In the upper part, a figure seated under a canopy and surrounded by servants may evoke the heavenly court of the Jade Emperor. The whole scene illustrates a mythical world where immortals gather in a peaceful landscape, symbolizing harmony and spiritual elevation.
