Description

Porcelain dish decorated with “famille rose” enamels. The center is adorned with two birds, one perched on a branch, the other in flight, accompanied by butterflies among peonies. The rim is decorated with peonies in gray, gold, and black.

The Famille Rose decoration, which appeared at the end of the Kangxi reign (1662-1722), is distinguished by the use of enamels applied to porcelain that has already been covered with a glaze and fired at a high temperature, between 1300 and 1350°C. These enamels, which are then fired in a muffle kiln at 750-800°C, include pink, white, and opaque yellow. Depending on the desired effect, they could be fired separately to preserve the sharpness of the patterns or together to obtain blended and opaque shades.
During the reign of Yongzheng (1723-1735), the imperial workshops in Jingdezhen perfected the range of pink family enamels, notably through the introduction of colloidal gold-based pink.
