Description

The joss-stick holder carved in spinach green jade, in a shape of a round cup with an caparisoned elephant figure in the centre. The animal is on a lotus stand, with a gu vase on its back. The iconography of the elephant (xiang 象) with a vase on its back (ping 瓶) is an homophonic pun which means “Peace and Prosperity” (太平有象 taiping youxiang). The inside of the cup is carved with bats alternating with stylized Shou characters (“longevity ”). The association of both bats and Longevity character is a wish of happiness and longevity.
