A tianqi lacquer casket decorated with phoenix

Description

The casket with a nice ochre yellow ground, engraved with phoenix flying among clouds and flowers. The decoration also with keyfrets and stylized kui dragons. The patterns are highlighted with red, black, brown and orange lacquer. The casket closed by a big circular engraved fitting, adorned with a phoenix in foliage. The sides with two small bronze handles. The inside lacquered in red. The Chinese phoenix is a composite bird, considered as the king of birds. He is combining the front of a wild swan, throat of a swallow, bill of a rooster, forehead of Mandchurian crane, crest of mandarin drake and neck of a snake. Its tail of five colors is named after the five cardinal virtues. The phoenix is also the motif for empress of China, ornementing her crown and clothing.
