Round box covered in Beijing cinnabar red lacquer, finely carved into the thickness of the lacquer and decorated with figures.
The lid is decorated in the center with a scene depicting a lakeside landscape : a man of letters seated in an open pavilion contemplates a composition of lotus flowers, trees and rocks. Three disciples stand on a promontory terrace and look toward the pavilion, completing the scene depicted on the lid.
The sides of the box are carved with double peaches among flowers and bats, motifs traditionally associated with wishes for longevity and happiness in Chinese iconography. The underside of the box is lacquered black, while the interior is covered with gold lacquer, a rare finish that highlights the precious and refined nature of the object.
