Description

The vase with quadrilobed shape body rising from a short foot to a tall neck set with a pair of handles. The body, foot and handles enameled with flowers and scrolls on a bright turquoise ground.
This type of vase is inspired by vessels used for a « pitch-pot » game played by aristocracy since 8th century BC. Participants attempt to throw arrows into multiple tubular cylinders attached on an elongated neck vase. The artists adapt the shape, and arrow-vases vases continued to be produced in a variety of materials.
This example is extremely rare because of its unusual shape. The delicacy of the flower pattern on a turquoise ground and the quality of gilding characterized the enamel production of the 16th century.
