Description

A pair of Mandarin ducks in bronze, lacquer and Shakudo, perched on a wooden base carved with flowering rocks and lotuses; the female admires the male, high up, wearing a cartouche on his belly, signed Gyoko-Saku .
Akasofu Gyoko lived in Tokyo, his factory producing cast metalwork for export. His given name was Sotojiro and he is recorded as a member of the Tokyo Chukinkai (Tokyo Cast Metalworkers’ Association) in the second half of the Meiji period.
